Coates 1989 AWBRIDGE, Domesday Book manor, scattered settlement in Michelmersh Hypothetical Old English 'Abbodhrycg'='ridge of the abbot'; the lack of the genitive '-es' is noteworthy (cf WOLVERTON). The manor belonged to St Peter's Abbey Winchester. Later 13th century forms begin to show the substitution of the reborrowed Latin 'abbas' (genitive 'abbatis'; 1256 'Abboterigge'). There is no support for Smith (English Place Name Elements I: 1) in his belief that it contains 'bry 'ot' 'hrycg'. There is no ancient bridge nearer than KIMBRIDGE in Mottisfont or Greatbridge and Stanbridge in Romsey; Awbridge is on a hilltop as viewed from Michelmersh. |
